School shooting stuns community
Argument between ex-couple leads to violent end
An argument broke out in the parking lot between a 17-year-old male from Coleman and a 17-year-old female Dow High School student.
Jessica Forsyth's condition has been upgraded from serious to fair.
She was not in class Wednesday but the 17-year-old male got in touch with the ex-girlfriend at home.
The girl's mother drove her school. While the mother sat in the car, the two 17 year olds talked.
The girl's mother is reported to have seen the shooting and then drove her car between the shooter and her daughter.
The male had pulled a gun from a backpack and shot the female student at least four times. He shot her three times in the chest and once in the arm. He then shot and killed himself.
Information Box:
Dow High School is one of three high schools in the Midland School District.
The school opened in 1968 and is named after the founder of the Dow Chemical Company, Herbert Henry Dow.
Just over 1,500 students attend the school.
There are 158 teachers and staff members.
The female victim, Jessica Forsyth, was taken to a local hospital and then transferred to Flint's Hurley Medical Center. She has been upgraded to fair condition.
Reports indicate the male was not a student at the high school.
The shooting happened around 11 a.m. in the parking lot of the high school.
Evidently, the two teens started dating in October. They had attended an alternative high school in the Midland area.
It wasn't until Monday that Forsyth transfered to Dow High School.
We have talked to Forsyth's family, and they say she is alert and that she would like people to pray for her and the teen, David Turner, who shot her.
According to school officials, the school was put into a Code Red lockdown, but that has since been lifted. Students have been given the option to go home or stay for the rest of the day. Grief counselors have been called in.
The school will remain in session for normal hours, according to the superintendent. Students will be allowed to leave early, with parental permission.
